Making an Impact: Giving Tuesday

Making an Impact: Giving Tuesday

What is Giving Tuesday and Why Should I Care?

Giving Tuesday was founded by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in NYC in 2012. The goal was to create a movement around charitable giving that would counter Black Friday and Cyber Monday and kick off the holiday season with an increased emphasis on community engagement. This cause would be responsible for creating a platform that could harness the power of social media and the generosity of people worldwide to inspire acts of kindness and generosity.  WOW- what incredible leadership and foresight to create positive waves in the world!

Fast forward 11 years and now #Giving Tuesday has grown into a global phenomenon. The impact of this day goes beyond the immediate financial contributions. It has become a catalyst for conversations about philanthropy, civic engagement, and the importance of giving back to communities. The movement has inspired countless stories of generosity and has become an annual reminder of the positive change that can occur when individuals come together for a common purpose.

As I prepare for the holiday season, I can’t help but be excited for this remarkable day. For me, it is a day of hope and celebration as I see people all over the world engage and prioritize their individual resources to support causes and communities that they are passionate about. This process isn’t perfect, but by taking this time to reflect and adjust where time and resources are being spent is important and invaluable. Personally, I think the point of Giving Tuesday is to have this reset- this time to reflect- and to kick start how we could change or refocus our time and energy to do more good in the world.

I am proud to say that at BMG Advisors, while we aren’t perfect, we work to prioritize sharing time and resources with the Kansas City community. Our team is actively serving on multiple non-profit boards and our volunteer hours and overall company giving reflect this work. BMG’s unofficial motto is “Do Good by Doing Good”.  We have this sign hanging in our office and it represents our fundamental belief that if we work to use our skills and resources positively in the world, we will all benefit from that intentionality in the future. The more equitable we can make resources in Kansas City and beyond, the more our city and world will benefit.

If you have read this far, my ask for you is that you take some time this holiday season to reflect on the causes you care most about. Remember, Giving Tuesday was created to form a #movement.  Be part of that #legacy!  If you have the ability to do so, please consider donating time or financial resources to help a nonprofit you care about.

If you are in the KC area and need some suggestions, here are a few that are close to my heart:

As Giving Tuesday continues to evolve, it remains a testament to the belief that small acts of kindness, when multiplied, can have a significant and lasting impact. The history of Giving Tuesday is one of community, compassion, and a collective effort to make the world a better place—one act of generosity at a time.

Who do you support, what organizations do you care about?  Please add their names and links in the comment section. Let’s see how deep this list can go and how many people this can reach. If we are invested in our communities, we will create a brighter future for all. Happy Holidays and thank you for doing good.
